Drawing from the cultural fabric of Northern Ontario and the religious teachings of the school, the design of the 15,500sf two storey expansion at Pope Francis Catholic School in Timmins aims to connect the students to each other, their community and the outside world. The design incorporates a central atrium that acts as the connector from the existing school to the addition with views to the sky. The project included the design of a dedicated 2,500sf YMCA child care comprised of two bi-lingual pre-school rooms, an infant room, toddler room and sleeping room. Catholic and First Nations symbolism were weaved throughout the space to create a place of inclusion and belonging.
